"Being a competitive athlete is fundamentally miserable"

While watching Eddie Izzard: Marathon Man last week, which I must say is absolutely sublime, that quote came up, and as weird as it seems, I kind of agree.
Maybe it's down to my personal choice of training alone that fuels this response, but it's quite a good starting point for a debate.
Why do we love it so much when we ache? Why do we push ourselves so hard when there is an easier way to exist?
Pride, sense of accomplishment, and self esteem are obviously big factors, but do we just love misery?
