Humans: A Jack of Evolutionary Trades

Jack-of-all-Trades noun
: a person who can do passable work at various tasks
Merriam-Webster Dictionary

I don't know how this would fit in with my regular rants, but let's see how it goes.
Something I have been throwing around my head for quite a while now is how AMAZINGLY versatile we are, but how little we actually use it. In the grand scheme of things, as animals and mammals, we are quite.... unique. Let me elaborate.

Running:
From when we can first walk, we start to toddle faster and faster. As we get older, we learn to sprint, and run distance. This might not seem very exciting, and compared to some of our mammalian cousins, like the panther, we are would be schooled terribly in a race (and possibly eaten), but this is a bigger picture, remember.

Swimming:

Ok, we do kinda suck in water. Compared to dolphins and whales, we really suck in water. We are trounced when it comes to distance and speed, and if we try and breathe whilst submerged, things get awkward. But it is something we CAN do. We can throw ourselves into a river and achieve forward propulsion. So, remember this, big picture.

Climbing:

Right, we aren't exactly squirrals, but we can climb trees, rocks, mountains, buildings, and any number of tall apparatus. We aren't great at it, and we don't exactly land on our feet and feel fine after falling 10 times our own body size (think cat off a fence, that'd be like 60ft for us), but humans are capable of going upwards as well as forwards.

So where does this all come together?

Can you think of anything that can do those 3 things? How about add the fact we are bipedal but also capable of crawling? We can explore potholes and gaps just small enough to fit our shoulders through. We are capable of fighting, and violence, eventually capable of utilising incredible reactions that do not require a single thought. Understandably, we haven't added flying to our repertoire yet, but evolution takes time.
Despite all this, how many of us actually cultivate these abilities? Even one of them? I think we are doing ourselves a great disservice. The term "Jack of all Trades" is usually followed by "master of none", and is usually derogatory, but for humans it is one of our greatest achievements. Something that no other animal has yet mastered.
I have only come to realise this in any depth in the past couple years, after learning to swim quite competently, run between towns, climb mountains, and punish people on the mats. And it saddens me, where evolution might take us if we don't at least use these skills.
It starts to become derogatory, it starts to sound like the Cantonese variant.

Back to the Blogosphere

Merry Christmas web-folk. I have no idea why I haven't been on here in so long. I'm almost, ashamed.
OK, since Download, ermmm, work has been pretty static. A 120 hours a week static.
Family is as lovely as always. Orlaith is walking! Almost 15 months old and potting around like she's lost. No talking still, just the very occasional word and a lot of shouting.
Training is, well, all fighting I'm afraid because of work. I do try and go the gym at least once a week. But work has not helped at all in this venture. Although at fighting I am giving it some BEANS! I just need to get over some recent injuries and get back competing.
Anyway, introductions over, back to what I do best....

Ramble.

Block Adapter Ahoy

Because I have more plugs! Get it?
Ok, best dam rash guards for MMA/Grappling/Running/Climbing/Gym Work etc. I have used my Rupture for all that and more and you wouldn't be able to tell at all. I recommend these to all athletes.
Next, Scramble clothing are relatively new to the fighting world, but are very refreshing to a sport full of gothic trash. Their spats (tights) are incredible. Given the money, half my wardrobe would be Scrambled.
I'm sure there are more things to plug, and I promise I'll give some intelligent and impartial reviews soon, just for any would be buyers who come across this.

200cc's of Coffee, Stat!

I must plug this bunch, whilst I sit here drinking one of their Mysore coffees. Very very tasty.

I took these on my lil old Fuji, and obviously couldn't upload them via phone. But, for future viewing pleasure, Download 2011.

Village People

Campwatch

That is a bloke dressed as a baywatch babe. Him and another ran through our camp with buoyancy aids, with a boom box playing the baywatch theme, asking if we'd seen sharks. Soon after we saw them acting, I think, as referees to 2 guys dressed as scorpion and sub zero fighting. Whut?

Toilet Tennis - Look Left

It's that time again =] I'm back at Download Festival. This years contestants are, Danielle, my brother Sean, Ava on her triumphant return, and of course myself. Weather so far has been everything. Windy, drizzling, torrential, hail, and blistering. We are holed up in black camp this year. A more... lively... area compared to last years orange. Expect more pictures, updates and... stuff as this weekend progresses.

The Goch

Finally! It's taken me years but I've FINALLY got round to climbing Snowdon. Tomorrow myself and a few of the guys from the watch are heading up to Snowdonia to climb Crib Goch, and then on up to Snowdon.
Nervous - 40%
Excited - 100%
Prepared - haha%
Although, to be fair, I have planned something kinda cool. I've got the crash cam! Which means, along with the regular camera, I'll be taking a constant recording of us climbing to the summit from my perspective. Meld that in with some awesome stills and some HD stuff and bam, a good few minutes of youtube footage :P
Either way I should be posting stuff on here, mobile signal willing. So, I dunno, watch, maybe?

Preppy

If it wasn't for my railcard, train journeys would well and truly rob me. I'm back off to brum for an advanced Gi session at Braulios. I've done little bits and pieces of Gi training in preparation of Ground Control next month, but this is the first chance I can well and truly get my teeth stuck in. Bit dumb really considering I'm going to be fighting in the Gi with pretty much zero experience, but hey, it builds character.
It also gives me chance to really put this Manto Gi through its paces. I've done a little bit before in generic Gi's during my traditional jujitsu days, but this is the real deal. Let's see how we go =]

The Battle of Brum

Like the brave little warrior I am, I have signed up for next months Fighters Only / Ground Control No Gi Tournament, which is part of the enormous Body Power EXPO. But, being a glutton for punishment (see: fool) I have also signed up for the Gi tournament the day before hand.
Well, I did say that I wanted a medal this year. Only way to do that is fight more =] 2 tournaments in 2 days should do it.

Mother-fuc*ing-down-fuc*ing-LOAD!

FU*K!
Despite thinking last year would be my last, I am going back to my musical home. My dirty, filthy, hungry, noisy musical home. This time, along with old faces, their will be virgins. Download/festival virgins that need breaking in. Bring on the debauchery!
Bring on SYSTEM OF A FUC*ING DOWN!
Bring... On... D O W N L O A D!

You're dumb

Quick note, if you dislocate your knee cap, don't run a half marathon 10 days later. It's daft. Keep for future reference.

OK, Almost Got There

I know I said I wanted to walk away with a medal, well I ALMOST did. I lost to the guy who got Bronze, but by 4 measly points. The ref didn't count anything I did, but oh well, I'll just tattoo "Don't Leave It To The Judges!" on my forehead. Next time....next time I'll get there.
On the bright side, I ruined the guy in my first fight with a slick anaconda from standing, throwing him down into a gator roll.
And I also pulled off the one technique I was dying to use. When I get hold of the "anaconda" video, I shall post, but till then...

So!

I went. I cannot express how incredible this club is. From the facilities to the instruction, it was an absolute class act. I will definitely be returning again, and again, and again.

Save Me Zoo-Zeetzoo!

This weekend, world willing, I will be making my way to the second city to join the prestigious Gracie Barra Birmingham. To say I'm excited is an under statement to say the least.
If all goes to plan, it won't be just no-gi I intend to do here, but full on BJJ as well. I've already got the gi prepared (big thanks to the awesome www.mmahq.com for that) so now I just need to go.
Expect all manner of pictures/updates etc.

To Put This Lightly

I will be walking out of Ground Control this year with another medal...
Doesn't matter how many I have to enter. I will be stepping onto a podium.

Timberrrr!

So, its 2011. Not too different from 2010, except from being a couple of days after Christmas, so, as Stocky would say, I've put on a bit of timber. A polite way of saying "hello fattie". Just can't resist a bit of Stollen and turkey. To all those with resolutions, lol, why do you have to wait 365 days to decide to make change that will most likely die by January 2nd? Because 2011 is gonna be so much better than 2010, just like that was so much better than 2009, which I believe kicked 2008s ass etc. It changes a digit or 2 at the end of a calendar. Big whoop. Pull your thumb out.
Anyway < / cynical >.
Christmas was bob on. First proper Christmas with Helen, and first Christmas with Orlaith. Food was lovely as ever, and I did try and resist too much, honest. Now I'm back to regular life. Working my ass off as a firefighter, geek, dad, partner and fighter. Roll on March =]
